Hey guys, welcome back to We Watched A Movie! I’m Mike, and today, we’re talking about 10 completely original movies—as far as I know—coming out in 2025.
1. Borderline – March 14th
This one stars the great Samara Weaving, already a certified Scream Queen with Ready or Not, Scream 6, and The Babysitter—which, by the way, was written by her husband, Jimmy Warden, who’s also directing Borderline. The film stars Weaving alongside Ray Nicholson (Jack Nicholson’s son), and the plot follows a bodyguard protecting a pop superstar and her athlete boyfriend from a determined stalker in 1990s Los Angeles.
The trailer’s weird, and the tone is hard to pin down, but that might mean there’s a lot left to uncover in the movie—something more like Barbarian or what Companion could have been if not for that second trailer.
2. Hell of a Summer – April 4th
A summer camp slasher movie—which is always fun to see. It looks a little Gen Z for me; I might be too old for this one. But it’s directed by Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk.
The synopsis is simple: the counselors of a summer camp are terrorized by a masked killer. The trailer makes it clear this is mostly a comedy with some slasher elements. This could go either way, but if you’re Gen Z and love slashers, I think you’re going to have a blast with it.
3. The Ritual – April 17th
This one is interesting solely because of the cast—we haven’t even seen a trailer yet. It’s another Exorcism movie, and the synopsis is:
“Two priests—one questioning his faith and the other reckoning with a troubled past—must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms.”
I know, I know—another exorcism movie. But here’s what makes this one different: the two priests are played by Al Pacino and Dan Stevens. Yeah. Instantly on board.
4. Sinners – April 17th
You’ve probably seen one of the two trailers for this, and it looks amazing. Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan, is directed by Ryan Coogler, and definitely has vampire vibes. There’s a From Dusk Till Dawn element to it that’s pretty intriguing.
5. Bring Her Back – May 30th
This one’s from the directors of Talk to Me (the Philippou brothers). It’s completely original and unrelated to Talk to Me.
The synopsis: A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.
The trailer is out, and it’s the perfect kind of horror trailer—it looks scary as hell, and I have no idea what’s going on. That’s exactly what you want. This is at the top of a lot of people’s lists right now.
6. Dangerous Animals – June 6th
Directed by Sean Byrne—the Australian horror filmmaker behind The Devil’s Candy and The Loved Ones. If you haven’t seen those, I highly recommend them. Byrne has been quiet for a while, but now he’s back with a movie starring Hassi Harrison (Tacoma FD) and Jai Courtney.
The plot: Zephyr, a savvy and free-spirited surfer, is abducted by a shark-obsessed serial killer and held captive on his boat. She must figure out how to escape before he carries out a ritualistic feeding to the sharks below.
That premise screams Sean Byrne. This sounds wild, and I can’t wait.
7. Together – August 1st
This one has had people buzzing at festivals—not quite on the level of Hereditary, but close. And it stars… Dave Franco?!
The plot: A couple’s move to the countryside triggers a supernatural incident that drastically alters their relationship, existence, and physical form.
From the trailer, it looks like these two literally merge into one being or something. It’s super weird, and I’m here for it.
8. Him – September 19th
A lot of people mistakenly think Jordan Peele is directing this, but he’s actually just producing. The director is Justin Tipping.
The plot: A promising young football player joins an isolated compound to train under a legendary team’s aging quarterback.
This reminds me a little of Any Given Sunday—which, depending on how you look at it, could have been a horror movie. Marlon Wayans is in this, and I love him. With Jordan Peele’s involvement, an interesting lead, and a cool premise, I’m super pumped for this one.
9. Keeper – October
Directed by Oz Perkins, who’s working at a Mike Flanagan pace these days. If you saw The Monkey in theaters, you might have caught a teaser for Keeper—I missed it, because I’m an idiot.
From what I’ve read, the teaser showed several women looking at a love interest, each saying, “I don’t think this is right for me,” before the camera pans back to all those love interests screaming and covered in blood.
Yeah, that sounds peak Oz Perkins.
The plot: During an anniversary getaway at a remote cabin, a wife is left alone after her husband departs, only to confront a sinister presence that exposes the cabin’s chilling past.
10. Edington – TBD
Ari Aster’s next film. And, listen, I didn’t love Beau is Afraid, but I’ll always be intrigued by whatever he does.
This one is a Western horror-comedy (what?). No release date yet, but it stars Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler, Emma Stone, and Luke Grimes.
Aster apparently wanted this to be his debut film before Hereditary, but it just didn’t work out. The only plot detail we have is that it follows a New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations. Hopefully, it makes at least some sense—unlike his last few movies.
Final Thoughts
So, there you go—10 original horror movies coming out this year! There are also some cool ones based on books (Clown in a Cornfield, for example), but I wanted to focus on originals for this list.
