Remember back in the day when slasher franchises would put things like “THE FINAL CHAPTER”, or “____ GOES TO HELL” at the end of their later sequel titles? That was fun. But we all knew better. Normally, horror franchises don’t go out on their own bloody shield. Them shits don’t ever die willingly.
Well, it made us laugh during our CinemaCon livestream the other night that the folks over at New Line Cinemas wanted us to believe that THE CONJURING: LAST RITES was really the end for the franchise. Well la-tee-da look what we have here.
In a conversation with THR, New Line Cinema boss Richard Brener let the ghost out of the trap that while this might be the last of the hot and sexy Vera Farmiga Patrick Wilson team ups….they are going to milk this franchise like it was Robert DeNiro’s nipples.
Brener first bragged about how well the sequel is testing before mentioning that this is simply “Phase one”:
It’s testing through the roof and we’re only at the director’s cut, the 10-week part of the movie where you’re normally very, very scared about the status of your film. We’re very early in the process, have very preliminary visual effects, but it’s already through the roof. So while this is last of what we call phase one, we are hopeful that we can make more.
When pushed on the MCU language used and asked what Phase 2 was, Brener simply responded “Phase two is TBD”. Which for lamens is short for “These big dicks aren’t ever going to stop making cheap ghost gag PG-13 movies that rake in the cash of scared 14 year olds”. Also, I am kidding. Kind of. I know they aren’t ALL toothless PG-13 Walmart horror films for kids who play on their phone. SOME of them are good. Sometimes. It’s like Sex Panther cologne math.
